Tour of John King’s Rare Book Room

On Sunday, September 10th, over forty members of the Book Club of Detroit were treated to a tour of member/bookseller John King’s Rare Book Room. John and his staff were so gracious to show us this amazing collection and highlight some of the most precious elements. There was so much to take in. Plus John explained that everything there is available for purchase. Of course we wanted it all!

(L) BCD member, Tom Meyer listens in. (C) Amazing collection. Note bookcases too. (R) John King at his desk.

This was such a popular event, that we divided into four groups. John and his staff

were good enough to give us four “performances.”

(L) Tom Heitjan spent so much time with us, highlighting some of the most special books and objects.

(C) John King in his Rare Book Room.

(R) Janelle Spann spoke to us and answered our many questions. Note the books that are stored in a hand-carved fireplace. This and most of the bookshelves in the room were purchased from a private home in Cleveland.

It was impossible to take it all in!

(L) Board member and bookseller, Paul Schoch looks at John’s very heavy meteorite. (C) An array of interesting ephemera. (R) An early reader who stayed too long.

Tour group Number 1 stands with Tom Heitjan and John King.

It was good to have some new members with us that day.

Some precious books.

We are very grateful to John and his staff for sharing their time with us. John has always been a great supporter of the Book Club of Detroit. Be sure to visit his downtown store and his smaller Ferndale shop. You can also search on his website!
